What is a Pharmacy Technician?

Pharmacy technicians are integral members of pharmacy teams, providing essential support to licensed pharmacists. Their duties encompass various tasks vital to the smooth functioning of a pharmacy. This includes assisting pharmacists in dispensing medications, managing inventory, and providing customer service by answering inquiries and processing refill requests. Additionally, they handle administrative responsibilities such as maintaining patient records, processing insurance claims, and managing paperwork associated with prescriptions. Pharmacy technicians may also be involved in compounding medications and utilizing pharmacy software systems for prescription management. Ensuring compliance with regulations and maintaining safety standards in medication handling are paramount aspects of their role. Overall, pharmacy technicians play a crucial role in facilitating efficient pharmacy operations and ensuring the safe and accurate dispensing of medications to patients.

Where can I work?

Pharmacy technicians have a wide range of employment opportunities across different healthcare industry sectors. The most common setting for pharmacy technicians is in retail pharmacies, including chain, independent, and grocery store pharmacies, where they assist pharmacists with medication dispensing and customer service. In hospital pharmacies, technicians collaborate with pharmacists to prepare and distribute medications to patients within the hospital, manage inventory and handle specialized medication orders. Long-term care facilities such as nursing homes also employ pharmacy technicians to help dispense medications to residents and maintain medication records. Additionally, pharmacy technicians can work in mail-order pharmacies, compounding pharmacies, home infusion pharmacies, specialty pharmacies, and government agencies like the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) or military healthcare facilities. These diverse opportunities offer pharmacy technicians a range of experiences and challenges in pharmacy practice.

NHA Versus PTCB
    • NHA
      • The NHA, also known as the National Healthcareer Association, is an organization that provides certifications that aim to improve the quality of healthcare. Once completing Western Medical Training Center’s pharmacy technician program, you are eligible to take the NHA exam which is called the ExCPT (Exam for the Certification of Pharmacy Technicians). The ExCPT focuses more on practical dispensing skills compared to the PTCE. Once an individual passes this exam, they are now eligible to hold their license and practice in a pharmacy.
        • To take the ExCPT, one must pay $125.00. This cost is not covered by Western Medical Training Center.
      • PTCB
        • The PTCB, also known as the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board, was established in 1995 and offers the PTCE exam. The Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam (PTCE) assesses the knowledge and skills necessary to work as a pharmacy technician and once an individual passes this exam, they are now eligible to hold their license and practice in a pharmacy. The PTCE covers a range of topics, including pharmacology, pharmacy law and regulations, medication safety, quality assurance, and order entry and processing.
          • To take the PTCE, one must pay $129.00. This cost is not covered by Western Medical Training Center.
