Program Description

WMTC's Pharmacy Technician Hybrid Program is a 14-week, 28-session program delivering all theory instruction through live, instructor-led online sessions — giving you the real-world skills and credentials to launch a pharmacy career without putting your life on hold.

Both scheduling tracks meet twice per week for live, instructor-led online instruction covering pharmacology, pharmacy law, medication safety, dispensing procedures, and insurance and billing workflows. Track A meets Wednesdays 12:00–4:00 PM and Thursdays 5:00–8:00 PM. Track B meets Saturdays 2:00–6:00 PM and Sundays 5:00–8:00 PM.

Starting in November 2026, all Pharmacy Technician students are invited to join our PT Skills Lab — CVS Health Collaborative Skills Lab, held every other Wednesday from 12:00–3:00 PM. These live, in-person sessions are led by WMTC instructors and local area and regional CVS Health leaders representing Southern California, and feature rotating themed workshops including CVS store tours, externship preparation, job readiness, resume development, mock interviews, and career pathway discussions. Attendance is strongly encouraged for all pharmacy students.

All students are required to complete a 120-hour student pharmacy externship. CVS Health is a collaborative option and career pathway partner for all of our students. Upon graduation, students are strongly encouraged to sit for the national ExCPT exam. Successful completion of our program qualifies learners to apply for their state pharmacy technician license.

What is a Pharmacy Technician?

Pharmacy technicians are integral members of pharmacy teams, providing essential support to licensed pharmacists. Their duties include assisting with dispensing medications, managing inventory, processing insurance claims, maintaining patient records, and providing customer service. Pharmacy technicians may also be involved in compounding medications and utilizing pharmacy software systems for prescription management. It's a high-demand, patient-facing role with strong career pathways across retail, hospital, and specialty pharmacy settings.

Weekly Schedule at a Glance

WMTC offers two scheduling tracks so you can choose the days that fit your life. Both tracks deliver the same curriculum through live, instructor-led online sessions and are taught by the same instructor.

Track A — Wed/Thu: Wednesdays 12:00–4:00 PM · Live Online Instructor-Led. Thursdays 5:00–8:00 PM · Live Online Instructor-Led.

Track B — Sat/Sun: Saturdays 2:00–6:00 PM · Live Online Instructor-Led. Sundays 5:00–8:00 PM · Live Online Instructor-Led.

Both tracks meet twice per week for 14 weeks (28 total sessions). The schedule is designed to be manageable for working adults and caregivers while delivering a rigorous, career-ready curriculum.

PT Skills Lab — CVS Health Collaborative Skills Lab

Starting in November 2026, all Pharmacy Technician students are welcome to join our PT Skills Lab — CVS Health Collaborative Skills Lab, held every other Wednesday from 12:00–3:00 PM at WMTC's San Diego headquarters. These live, in-person sessions are led by WMTC instructors and local area and regional CVS Health leaders representing Southern California who are passionate about empowering learners with real-world skills to support their career development.

Sessions rotate through six themed workshops: CVS store tours, meetings with local area and regional CVS Health leaders representing Southern California, externship preparation and Q&A, job readiness and resume development, mock interview practice, and CVS pharmacy workflow, rules, regulations, and career pathway discussions. Students register through the Student Portal — just like Friday Night Study Night.

CVS Health is a collaborative option and career pathway partner for all WMTC pharmacy students. Graduates receive direct access to CVS Health externship placements and employment opportunities, as well as the option to complete their externship at any pharmacy within WMTC's network of approved sites.

Externship & Job Placement Support

All students are required to complete a 120-hour student pharmacy externship. After completing your program requirements, you are eligible for placement at a CVS Health location or any approved pharmacy in WMTC's network. Our team actively supports you throughout the externship experience — from placement coordination to on-site check-ins.

WMTC's career services team also provides job placement assistance, resume support, and interview preparation to help you transition directly into employment after graduation.

Certification: NHA ExCPT

Upon completing the program, graduates are strongly encouraged to sit for the ExCPT (Exam for the Certification of Pharmacy Technicians), administered by the National Healthcareer Association (NHA). Successful completion of our program qualifies learners to apply for their state pharmacy technician license. The ExCPT is nationally recognized and widely accepted by retail pharmacy employers, including CVS Health.

The exam covers practical dispensing skills, pharmacology fundamentals, pharmacy law and regulations, medication safety, and insurance and billing workflows — all of which are taught throughout the WMTC curriculum. Exam fee: $125 (not included in tuition).

Program Dates

Minimum Enrollment Notice: All cohorts are subject to a minimum student enrollment requirement. If a cohort does not meet the minimum, enrolled students will be notified in advance and offered the next available start date at no penalty.
